Potter Closes With a Flourish at Puerto Rico Open
Friday, February 26, 2021

After making a bogey on the 12th hole at the Puerto Rico Open yesterday, Ted Potter was sitting at 1 over par and in danger of leaving himself in a precarious position heading into today's second round of the satellite event being played at the Grand Reserve County Club.

However, unlike at so many of his previous tournaments this season, Ted shifted into another gear over the final six holes, finishing birdie, par, eagle, par, par, birdie, and winding up at 3 under and in a tie for 25th in the $3 million event.

The last two par 5's were key in the turn-around, Ted making the eagle 3 on the 15th hole, then closing out the round by hitting his second shot to the fringe on 18 and getting it up and down for a birdie and a 3-under 69.

Ted is still not out of the woods, since he's just two strokes over the cut line of 1 under. He's four behind leader Tommy Gainey, who has been struggling to get back to the PGA Tour after gaining a great deal of notoriety several years back for his practice of wearing two gloves. Gainey posted a 7-under 65 and has a one-stroke lead over a group of seven at 6 under, and two over another group of seven at 5 under.

Two former Gators are in the field - Matt Every winding up on the cut line at 1 under, and veteran Chris Couch at 3-over 75.
