PGA National Takes Its Toll; Potter Misses Cut
Saturday, February 29, 2020

The cut line at the Honda Classic kept dropping over two days until it finally settled in at plus 3 Friday evening, but Ted Potter still missed it by one stroke after tacking on his second straight 2-over-par 72 yesterday.

The PGA National Champion course proved to be the winner for the second day as first-round leaders Tom Lewis and Harris English, who began the day in the lead at 4 under, couldn't be found after 36 holes, while Brendan Steele took over the top at 5 under 135. Steele holds a one-stroke lead over Lee Westwood, Luke Donald and J. T. Poston. There are four more at 3 under, including Gary Woodland.

Ted began on the front nine and as he has so many times in recent months, went to 1 under quickly with a birdie on No. 3. But he couldn't keep it going, and made four bogeys and just one birdie over the next six holes and went to the back at 4 over. With the cut line eventually moving to plus 3, all Ted needed to do was make one birdie on the back to get to the weekend. But he made 9 pars and wound up one shot short.

Gators: Only one made it, Billy Horschel posting 73-67-140, even par, tied for 21st. Brian Gay (74-75), Camilo Villegas (75-77) and Matt Every (74-85) missed the cut. Seminoles: Daniel Berger made it with 69-70-139, 1 under, tied for 15th. Brooks Koepka (74-74) and Hank Lebioda (73-78) are heading home.
