Oosthuizen Ties for 30th in Honda; Rowland Struggling on Champions Tour
Monday, February 28, 2022

Louis Oosthuizen and Roger Rowland both disappointed in different degrees over the weekend, Oostie finishing tied for 30th at the Honda Classic despite making a slew of birdies, and Roger still not able to find his best game and tieing for 78th in the Cologuard Classic.

Louis shot 75-65-72-70-282, 2 over par in Palm Beach Gardens, and earned a check for $43,133. That increased his take for the season to $327,768. Oddly enough, he made 19 birdies over the 72 holes, which tied him for first in the event. But 11 bogeys, two doubles and two triples (21 over for the 15 holes, a rarity for him), led to his downfall. The stats told the story for Louis - he hit just 35 of 56 fairways (62.5%) and 42 of 72 greens in regulation (58%). He won't be playing this week in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill, nor will last year's champ, Bryson DeChambeau, who is still nursing injuries to his hip and hand.

Sepp Straka won the Honda, proving to be the most consistent in a three-way battle with 54-hole leader Daniel Berger and Shane Lowry. Straka finished at 10 under par, which Berger had predicted could be the winning score after his round on Friday put him at that number with 36 holes to play. Lowry wound up one stroke behind, while Berger dropped to fourth at 7 under with a Sunday 74 that ended with a ball in the water on his final hole. He had begun the day at 12 under, five strokes in front, and appeared to be a cinch until his Sunday swoon.

Berger's FSU partner, Brooks Koepka, tied for 16th at even-par 280 after a Sunday 69, as did Gator Billy Horschel, who closed with 70. Gator Brian Gay, now playing both the PGA and Champions tours, tied for 42nd at 3 over.

As opposed to Louis, Roger made just five birdies over the 54 holes of the Cologuard. He collected $850 and raised his earnings to $1,970 for the two events he's played; he's 92nd on the money list. Roger is in the entries for this week's $2 million Hoag Classic in Newport Beach, California. Gators Mark Calcavecchia and Chris DiMarco will also be playing, and Scott Dunlap is the first alternate, which usually gets a player in.

Ever-young Miguel Angel Jimenez won the Cologuard with 66-67-65-198, 18 under par, which included a hole-n-one. He was four ahead of Woody Austin and league leader Bernhard Langer, who moved up the board with a final 65. Dunlap tied for 36th at 1 under; DiMarco tied for 43rd at even par; and Calcavecchia tied for 49th at 2 over. Marco Dawson, former touring pro at Adena Springs, tied for 18th at 6 under, and Tom Lehman, architect for Ocala Preserve, tied for 47th at 1 over.

This week's satellite event is the $3.7 million Puerto Rico Open at the Grande Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande. Ted Potter will be in action, along with Gators Camilo Villegas and the haven't-been-seen-in-a-while duo of Matt Every and Chris Couch. Matt could have played in the Arnold Palmer Invitational at Bay Hill as a two-time past champion, but elected for Puerto Rico instead.
