Niemann Takes 3-Stroke Lead in Genesis Invitational
Friday, February 18, 2022

Joaquin Niemann ran away and hid in the first round of the Genesis Invitational yesterday, putting up an 8-under-par 63 over the par-71 Riviera Country Club. Niemann made nine birdies and one bogey (on a par 5) and goes into today's round with a three-stroke lead over Scottie Scheffler, Jordan Spieth, Max Homa and Cameron Young. Homa is the defending champ, collecting a check for $1,674,000 last year.

As an invitational, there were just 120 teeing off yesterday, but Wyndham Clark has already been disqualified.

There are six tied at 67, including Collin Morikawa and Justin Thomas. There are two Seminoles playing, Hank Lebioda, who is one of 22 players tied at 2-under 69, and Brooks Koepka, tied for 61st at even-par 71, the early cut line. There are no Gators in the field.
