Mickelson and Birthday Boy Beem Make Champions Debuts Today
Monday, August 24, 2020

A rare Monday beginning on the Champions Tour will have a little extra going for it today. Everybody's favorite, Phil Mickelson, missed the cut at the Northern Trust Friday and fell out of the top 70 so he won't get a chance to advance to the BMW Championship on Thursday. So Phil, who recently turned 50, will make his debut against the older guys in the $3 million Charles Schwab Series at Ozarks National in Ridgedale, Missouri.

Also making his debut is Rich Beem, the 2002 PGA Championship winner, whose birthday today came right on time. It's been a good year for the senior circuit, with debuts by Ernie Els, Jim Furyk and K. J. Choi already having preceded Mickelson and Beem.

The Ozarks National course is pretty new, opening in the fall of 2018 after being developed by Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore. It's a par 71 with three par 5s, and it measures 7,036 yards.

The field is also littered with ex-Gators, including Chris DiMarco, Mark Calcavecchia, Scott Dunlap and Dudley Hart.
