McIlroy Comes From Behind to Win at Wells Fargo
Monday, May 10, 2021

The third-round leader not going on to win on Sunday has gotten to be the norm on the PGA Tour recently, and the trend continued at the Wells Fargo Championship yesterday, as Rory McIlroy roared from behind to win the $8.1 million event by one stroke over Abraham Ancer.

Keith Mitchell led after 54 holes at 9 under par, with McIlroy and Gary Woodland deadlocked for second at 7 under. But Rory closed with 3-under-par 68 to wind up at 10 under, while Mitchell shot 1-over-72 to drop back to a tie for third with Viktor Hovland, who closed with 67. Woodland was only able to muster up an even-par 71, and tied with Hovland. Ancer's 66 lifted him to 9 under and an all-alone second.

Ted Potter finished with a disappointing 75, including a triple bogey on the final hole, and ended in a four-way tie for 72nd. He collected a check for $16,038, raising his total for the season to $317,280. He dropped one spot on the money list to 159th, and moved up three spots on the FedEx Cup points list to 157th.

Ted will be heading to McKinney, Texas this week for the $8.1 million AT&T Byron Nelson, looking to make his third straight cut at the TPC Craig Ranch. There's another strong field entered, including defending champ Sung Kang, who picked up a cool $1,422,000 last time.

Ex-Florida collegians are aplenty, Daniel Berger, Brooks Koepka and Hank Lebioda for the Seminoles, and Matt Every and Camilo Villegas for the Gators. Lebioda shot 67 Sunday and wound up tied for 51st at 3 over par, moving up 22 spots.
