Matsuyama Takes Over Lead at Medinah
Saturday, August 17, 2019

The top of the leaderboard changed hands again Friday at the BMW Championship, with Hideki Matsuyama tacking on a 9-under-par 63 (tying the Medinah course record) to his opening-round 69 to take a one-stroke lead over Patrick Cantlay and Tony Finau. Matsuyama's 132 is 12 under par and he replaced Justin Thomas as the leader after Thomas followed his 65 with a 3-under 69 for 134, 10 under. He dropped into a tie for fifth.

With 36 holes to play, it's still wide open, with another six players at 9 under, and Rory McIlroy tied for 11th at 8 under. Seminole Brooks Koepka is seven back at 5 under after rounds of 68-71, and Phil Mickelson dropped back with 70-73-143, 1 under. Gator Billy Horschel shot 73 and is at even par 144.

Tiger Woods made some putts - enough for five birdies - but he missed many more and finished at 1 under for the day and 2 under overall. He's going to have to make a serious move over the last 36 holes to reach or pass 11th place, the position he needs to get him to the FedEx finale next week at the Tour Championship in Atlanta.
