Late Meltdown Hurts Potter at Northern Trust Open
Friday, August 24, 2018

A late meltdown on the front nine prevented Ted Potter from ending round 1 of the Northern Trust Open in a contending position. Ted was sailing along at 3 under par through 14 holes, just two strokes off the lead, after making birdies at 12, 15, 17 and 3, negated by just one bogey, at 16.

Then the meltdown occurred - bogeys at 5, 6 and 7. Ted wound up at even-par 71, five behind the leaders, and tied for 60th, the early projected cut line.

Sean O'Hair, Kevin Tway, Jamie Lovemark and Vaughn Taylor posted 5-under 66s over the Ridgewood Country Club course in Paramus, New Jersey to take a precarious lead over a slew of chasers - 14 players at 4 under. That group included Dustin Johnson and Hideki Matsuyama.

Phil Mickelson is in a contending spot at 3 under, tied for 18th and Jordan Spieth shot 1-under 70 and is tied for 49th. Tiger Woods birdied No. 17 for a back-nine 35, then made two bogeys and a birdie on the front to wind up tied with Ted at even par 71.

    Gators: Billy Horschel - 69; Brian Gay - 71. Seminoles: Brooks Koepka - 67; Daniel Berger - 69.
