Kuchar Takes Big Lead at Genesis Invitational
Friday, February 14, 2020

Matt Kuchar posted a 7-under-par 64 early Thursday morning at the $9.3 million Genesis Invitational and then watched all day as 119 other invitees tried to catch him. Nobody came close.

Kuchar holds a three-stroke lead at the par-71 Riviera Country Club over a group of five at 4 under. There are another 10 deadlocked at 3 under, including Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, Jason Day, Bryson DeChambeau and Patrick Reed.

The group at 2 under numbers 16, and includes Tiger Woods, who shot out of the gate with an eagle 3 on the first hole, then added birdies on 5 and 8 for a front-nine 31, 4 under. But, after doing everything right going out, Tiger couldn't find the fairway off the tee coming home, and he was lucky to make just two bogeys for 38 and his final 69. Also at 2 under are Seminole Brooks Koepka, Paul Casey, Justin Rose and defending champ J. B. Holmes, who picked up a cool $1,332,000 last year.

Several big guns couldn't handle the conditions and finished at 1 over, including Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Adam Scott, Steve Stricker, Tony Finau and Gator Brian Gay. One other Gator, Matt Every, shot 2-over 73.
