Matt Kuchar was unable to match his opening-round 64 at the Genesis Invitational, but his 2-under-par 69 was still enough for him to retain a two-stroke lead at the halfway point of the $9.3 million event at Riviera Country Club.
Kuchar is 9 under par after 36 holes, two strokes better than Rory McIlroy, Harold Varner II and Wyndham Clark, with another four deadlocked three behind at 6 under.
Dustin Johnson made a big move up the board, adding a 5-under 66 to his opening 73 and he's tied for 11th at 4 under. Tiger Woods began the day with a birdie on the 10th hole, but a double bogey on 15 was an omen of things to come and the best he could muster up was a 2-over 73; he's tied for 45th at even par. While he played the front nine in 31 on Thursday, a 37 yesterday left him 9 strokes behind Kuchar.
Seminole Brooks Koepka matched Tiger's 69-73-142.
The cut came at 1 over par and 68 players made it into round 3. That left Jason Day (68-76), Justin Thomas (74-71) and Phil Mickelson (72-74) heading home for the weekend, along with Gators Brian Gay (72-74) and Matt Every (73-76).
