Koepka Tied for Open Lead, Berger Tied for 12th
Friday, July 21, 2017

The PGA Tour's two Seminoles continue to make their presence felt, both shooting under par in the first round of The Open at Royal Birkdale. Brooks Koepka's 5-under-par 65 is tied for first with Matt Kuchar and Jordan Spieth, while Daniel Berger is tied for 12th after a 2-under 69. Gator Billy Horschel had a rough day and was 6 over.

Weather conditions weren't bad for the opener, but were going to greatly regress for today's second round.

The trio at the top held a one-stroke edge over Charl Schwartzel and two strokes over a group of six at 3-under 67. The early projected cut line was at 2 over par, but the cold, winds and expected afternoon rain will definitely drive that number up.

Of the marquee names, Ian Poulter shot 67, Bubba Watson 68, Henrik Stenson, John Rahm, Adam Scott and Jason Day 69, and Rory McIlory an excellent 71 after he bogeyed five of the first six holes. Rickie Fowler and Dustin Johnson also shot 71, and Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson, 73. The senior group fared well, with Ernie Els at 68, Steve Stricker at 69, and Trilogy architect Tom Lehman at 72.

PLAY SUSPENDED - At the PGA Tour's satellite event, the Barbasol Championship in Auburn, Alabama, Martin Flores, Cameron Tringale and Zac Blair were tied at the top at 6 under par when darkness suspended play with 27 players still on the course. Gator Brian Gay posted a 2-under 69 and was tied for 42nd, and Matt Every was tied for 74th after an opening even-par 71.

The event gives a great opportunity for Web.com players and others fighting for status to improve their positions in the pecking order.
