Friday, April 1, 2022

The biggest names contesting the $8.6 million Valero Texas Open are in danger of missing the cut after yesterday's round 1 at the par-72 TPC San Antonio.

Defending champ Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Rickie Fowler all shot par and are one stroke off the early projected cut line of minus 1. Bryson DeChambeau is another stroke back at 73 and Hideki Matsuyama shot 74, along with Jason Day.

The leader after 18 holes is Russell Knox, who posted a 7-under-par 65; he leads unknown Rasmus Hojgaard by one. Tied for third at 5 under are J. J. Spaun, Aaron Ral, Matt Kuchar and Denny McCarthy. There are another 11 deadlocked at 4-under 68.

The lone Gator, Camilo Villegas, shot 72, and the lone Seminole, Hank Lebioda, knocked himself out with a 6-over 78.

CHAMPIONS - Roger Rowland goes in his fourth test against the elder set today in the $1.6 million Rapiscam System Classic in Biloxi, Mississippi. Roger tees off on the 10th hole in the final group of the day at 1:22 at the Grand Bear Golf Club. The former Ocalan has earned $8,770 in his previous three events and is 79th on the money list.

Gators: Mark Calcavecchia, Scott Dunlap, Chris DiMarco and two-tour player Brian Gay. Also, Marco Dawson, former touring pro at Ocala's defunct Adena Springs.
