Tuesday, August 13, 2019

Bo Hoag came from behind to capture the WinCo Foods Portland Open in Oregon, posting a final-round 65 for 22-under 262, winning by two strokes, and he'll move on to Columbus, Ohio this week for the second event in the Korn Ferry playoffs. There will be 138 players vying over the Scarlet course at Ohio State University, either trying to obtain their PGA Tour cards or to move up the ladder and improve their exempt status.

It's a diverse group, and sprinkled among the youngsters are Tour veterans also attempting to regain status. Among them are Hunter Mahan, D. J. Trahan, Steve Marino, Ben Crane, Boo Weekley and Peter Uihlein.

Gators Tyson Alexander, trying to make it for the first time, and Brett Stegmaier, who has had some success on Tour, will also be shooting for the major share of the $1 million purse. Same for Dominic Bozzelli, who spent a week at Golden Hills several years ago during an FSGA event, Central Floridians Rob Oppenheim and Nick Lindheim, Ocala Open winners Dan McCarthy and Wade Binfield, FSU rookie Hank Lebioda and 2019's surprise rookie, U. S. Amateur champ Viktor Hovland.

In Oregon, Oppenheim finished sixth at 16 under and moved up from 46th to 35th in the point standings, while Binfield tied for 18th and jumped from 59th to 55th. Stegmaier tied for 24th at 11 under, going from 69th to 65th, and Alexander was able only to muster up a tie for 39th at nine under despite opening with a 7-under 64. He remained in 57th place.

With his victory, Hoag vaulted from 31st to seventh and runner-up Scott Harrington jumped from 38th to 19th.
