Greenbrier Leader Board Overrun By Tour's New Breed
Sunday, September 15, 2019

Ted Potter, J. B. Holmes, Zach Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Boo Weekley, Jimmy Walker, Bill Haas, J. J. Henry and John Daly have one thing in common at the Greenbrier in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia. All those name veterans were unable to get it to 4 under par for 36 holes, and all missed the cut. So, among noteworthy veterans, it's pretty much left to Keegan Bradley, Jason Dufner and Bubba Watson to make any kind of run in today's finale at the Old White TPC.

Proving the point is Joaquin Niemann sitting alone atop the leader board at 15 under par, with Richy Werenski, Nate Lashley and Robby Shelton at 13 under, and Adam Long and Scottie Scheffler at 12 under.

The PGA Tour is undergoing a major transformation from the recent days when Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Jason Day, Rory McIlroy and the rest always dominated the headlines. With new No. 1 Brooks Koepka and so many others waiting for the more glamorous events beginning with the two in Hawaii, the fall/winter schedule almost takes on the appearance of being designed for a lesser tour with players auditioning for the main event, although the results of the 2018-2019 season proved these who-is-he guys can really play.

After his smooth 4-under-66 on Thursday, Ted Potter just had to stay where he was to make the cut. He got off to a rocky start by three-putting his first hole, the 10th, and taking bogey on his third, the 12th. But birdies on 15 and 17 got him back to even par for the day and still on track to make the cut. His goal remained in sight after five straight pars on the front until he bogeyed No. 6. A birdie on 7 briefly nullified the bogey but a bogey on 8 buried him. Needing a birdie on 9, he hit his second 13 feet, 8 inches from the hole, but was unable to convert and event No. 1 of the new season was history.

Ted will be back Thursday for the Sanderson Farms event in Jackson, Mississippi, and the vets who missed the cut this week will be back, too, joined by K. J. Choi, Lucas Glover, Stewart Cink, Emiliano Grillo and all of the young guns.
