Finau's 62 Propels Him Into Phoenix Lead
Sunday, February 2, 2020

Tony Finau came out of the clouds to take over the lead at the Waste Management Phoenix Open yesterday with a fabulous 9-under-par 62 and a 54-hole total of 16 under that gave him a one-stroke edge over Webb Simpson.

Simpson's 7-under-64 also moved him up the leaderboard as 36-hole leader J. B. Holmes was able to only muster up a 1-under 70, and he's tied for third with Hudson Swafford (66) at 14 under. Webb helped his cause and thrilled the fans with his first career hole-in-one, dunking a 196-yarder on the 12th hole.

The crowds at TPC Scottsdale continue to make the event the No. 1-attended tournament on Tour each year, and it was reported, unofficially, that 200,000-plus were trampling the grounds yesterday. As usual, the infamous 16th hole received much of the media hype, with those who missed the green on an afternoon when a pitching wedge was the club of the day receiving the most raspberries from the boozed-up crowd.

The lone Gator left in the hunt, Billy Horschel, couldn't keep up the pace of his first two rounds - 63 and 68 - and fell to a tie for 16th with a 73 for 9 under. Seminole Daniel Berger's 66 for 206, 7 under, moved him up to a tie for 30th.
