Finau Takes 3-Stroke Lead in Shanghai
Friday, October 26, 2018

Everybody who wasn't interested in sitting home got to compete this week, with 78 players contesting the WGC-HSBC Championship in Shanghai, and another 132 staying home for the $4.4 million Sanderson Farms Championship in Jackson, Mississippi. As usual, the WGC drew all the bodies who have been dominating the headlines recently, while all the players who have trouble making the field every week are congregated in Jackson.

After his successful overseas excursion, Ted Potter has taken a well-earned week off.

Tony Finau is the halfway leader in Shanghai, posting 66-67-133, and his 11-under total is three better than the trio of Patrick Reed, Justin Rose and Tommy Fleetwood. Gator Billy Horschel is tied for 13th at 4 under after rounds of 68-72-140 and Seminole Brooks Koepka, who has been sizzling lately, tailed off a bit for this one with 72-74-146, 2 over, and he's tied for 40th.

Big guns Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Francesco Molinari all have a lot of work to do - they're all at 5 over.

Back home, having the name Cameron appeared to be a good sign. Well-named Cameron Champ is the first-round leader at 7-under 65, with Cameron Tringale one behind in second. There's a logjam of six players at 67.

Gator Matt Every, who hasn't been heard from in recent months, is tied for ninth at 4-under 68. The projected cut is at even-par 72.
