County Grammer Has the Right Words in Hollywood Gold Cup
Tuesday, June 1, 2021

WinStar Farm’s Country Grammer, battling head-to-head with Royal Ship turning for home in Santa Anita’s $301,000, Gr. I Hollywood Gold Cup, surrendered the lead at the top of the stretch, fought back to take over again past the sixteenth pole, then held off a final surge to be best by a head at the wire.

It’s the second graded stakes win for the 4-year-old colt by Tonalist, who turned in an Under Tack quarter in :21 flat before he was purchased out of the Wavertree Stables consignment for $450,000 by Bradley Thoroughbreds, Agent, at the 2019 OBS Spring Sale. He had previously won the Gr. III Peter Pan at Belmont Park last July, then finished second last month in the Gr. II Californian at Santa Anita after a layoff of 8 1/2 months.

Trained by Bob Baffert, Country Grammer is 3-1-1 in 8 starts and yesterday's check for $180,000 raised his earnings to $377,320.
