Friday, February 12, 2021

Pebble Beach Golf Links proved to be the main course yesterday, hosting 19 of the top 21 scorers in the opening round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.

Patrick Cantlay produced another of his eye-catching rounds, posting a 10-under-par 62, good for a two-stroke lead over Akshay Bhatia and Henrik Norlander, and three over resurgent Jordan Spieth and Nate Lashley. The only two in the top 21 who played Spyglass Hill were Will Gordon, who shot 66, and Seminole Daniel Berger, who shot 67.

Ted Potter played Spyglass Hill and wound up with 39-34-73, 1 over par, and is tied for 97th. Ted made four bogeys on the front nine and just one birdie, and was 3 over par heading to No. 10. On the back he made a slight comeback with birdies on both par 5's for his 34. When Ted won the event in 2018 he posted rounds of 68-71-62-69-270, 17 under par, finishing three ahead of Jason Day, Dustin Johnson, Phil Mickelson and Chez Reavie.

Seminoles: Berger, 67; Hank Lebioda, 70 (SH). Gators: Brian Gay, 70 (SH); Matt Every, 77 (SH).
