Thomas, Kokrak Lead BMW at 7 Under; 58 Break Par
Friday, August 16, 2019

Medinah Country Club took a beating in the first round of the BMW Championship yesterday, with 58 of 69 players finishing under par and another nine at even-par 72. Only Vaughn Taylor, at 1 over, and Joaquin Niemann, at 2 over, failed to join the group.

Justin Thomas and Jason Kokrak are the two leaders at 7 under par, and there's a group of five just one stroke behind, including Jim Furyk, Brandt Snedeker and Patrick Cantlay. There are nine more at 5 under, headed by Tony Finau, Adam Scott and Rickie Fowler.

Brooks Koepka, Kevin Kisner, Patrick Reed, Justin Rose and Jon Rahm are among a logjam at 4 under, and in all, there are 22 players within three strokes of the two leaders. It's a wide open affair in the last event leading to the Tour Championship. Rory McIlroy shot 69, Phil Mickelson 70 and Tiger Woods 71, and they can't afford to fall further behind in today's second round, not with all the firepower between them and the lead.

Tiger made three birdies and two bogeys on the front side, and one of each on the back. He never got it better than 2 under all day.

HOVLAND TIED FOR OHIO LEAD - Viktor Hovland continues to prove he's destined to get a PGA Tour card, firing a 7-under-par 64 to tie for the lead in the Nationwide Children's Hospital Championship in Columbus. The U. S. Amateur champ is deadlocked with Cameron Piercy, one stroke ahead of Robert Streb and Doug Ghim at the Ohio State University Scarlet course No. 3.

Gator Tyson Alexander is six behind after an opening 70, which is two strokes above the projected cut line of 1 over. He's tied for 32nd. Ocala Open winner Wade Binfield is at even-par 71, same as Seminole rookie Hank Lebioda. Two-time Ocala Open winner Dan McCarthy and Gator Brett Stegmaier are one stroke over the cut line with 2-over-par 73s.
