Potter, Veterans Return for Shriner's Event in Vegas
Monday, September 30, 2019

The field for this week's Shriner's Hospital for Children Open is the first event of the season that will feature a huge group of veterans, as opposed to the first few where the Young Turks took over the playing field. Of course, the way they are performing, that's not to say that one of the Turks won't jump up and win this one, too.

Cameron Champ, the 54-hole leader, held on with a final-round 69 to win the Safeway Open at 17 under, one stroke better than Adam Hadwin, who closed with 67. Marc Leishman moved up to third at 14 under after posting a 65, tied for the low round of the day with Corey Connors. Tied for fourth at 13 under were Charles Howell III, Zac Blair and Justin Thomas. Champ's payday amounted to $1,188,000.

Seminole Daniel Berger and Gator Brian Gay were among those in a deadlock at 8 under, and Seminole sophomore Hank Lebioda tied for 44th at 5 under. In the new 65 and ties making the cut format, 67 players finished the 72 holes.

The lure of Las Vegas may be the reason for the many veterans vying this week for the major share of the $7 million purse, and the list includes Seminole Brooks Koepka, Phil Mickelson, Hideki Matsuyama, and defending champ Bryson DeChambeau. And, of course, Ted Potter, Berger, Gay and fellow Gator Matt Every.
