Rowland Enjoys Best Week on Champions Tour
Monday, March 7, 2022

Roger Rowland enjoyed his best day on his 2022 Champions Tour schedule Sunday, posting a 1-under-par 70 in the final round of the Hoag Classic in Newport Beach, California

With the performance, Roger beat his previous best round of 71 set on Friday and resulted in his best finish, a six-way tie for 46th in the $2 million event. He also shot his low 54-hole total, 215 (71-74-70), and collected his biggest paycheck, $6,800. That brought his total for three tournaments to $8,770, and moved him up from 92nd on the money list to 79th.

Roger began round 3 with a birdie on No. 10, then parred the next six holes. He bogeyed 17 and birdied 18 for a 1-under 35. On the front, he birdied No. 3 and bogeyed the par-3 eighth for an even-par 35.

Retief Goosen ran away with the title at 15 under par, clinching it with a 63 in the finale. K. J. Choi was second at 11 under, and Lee Janzen third at 9 under.

Tom Lehman, architect of the Ocala Preserve course, finished at 2 under and Gator Scott Dunlap was 1 under after sneaking in from the alternate list. Marco Dawson, former touring pro for the Adena Springs course, was at even par, Gator Chris DiMarco wound up at 8 over, and Gator Mark Calcavecchia soared to 21 over.

ARNOLD PALMER INVITATIONAL - The Bay Hill golf course confounded the players like never before, so much so that in Sunday's final round, only four players broke the par of 72, only two of them breaking 70. And many of the contenders were very vocal about it afterwards.

Scottie Scheffler two-putted from 69 feet on the 18th hole to secure an even-par 72 and his second victory of the current season. He wound up 5 under, winning by a stroke over Gator Billy Horschel. Billy closed with a 75, needed a 29-footer for birdie to tie, and barely missed it. He wound up deadlocked with Viktor Hovland, who shot 74, and Tyrell Hatton, who solved the difficult conditions with a 3-under 69.

Among those in the hunt when the round started and who couldn't make a dent were Talor Gooch, who dropped into a tie for 7th after closing with 77;  Rory McIlroy, who opened with a 65 on Thursday and finished with a 76 on Sunday, tying for 13th at 1 over, and Jon Rahm, whose 74 left him at 2 over, tied for 17th.

The other sub-72's belonged to Lucas Herbert (his 68 was the day's lowest), Sam Burns (his 71 gave him a tie for 9th at 1 under), and Hideki Matsuyama (tied for 20th at 3 over with a closing 70). The scoring average for the finale was near 76.

THE PLAYERS CHAMPIONSHIP - Louis Oosthuizen returns to action in the $20 million TPC at Sawgrass, which features the strongest full field of the season. Justin Thomas will be defending his title, which deposited $2.7 million into his bank account last year.

Three Seminoles are in - Daniel Berger, Brooks Koepka and Hank Lebioda. Billy Horschel and Brian Gay (now juggling two tours) will represent the Gators.
