Duke, Toms Lead in Mitsubishi Classic
Saturday, May 7, 2022

Looking to ratchet it up this week after a disappointing four weeks on the Champions Tour, Roger Rowland got off to a solid start yesterday in the $1.8 million Mitsubishi Electric Classic in Duluth, Georgia. The former Ocalan parred the first five holes at the paar-72 TPC Sugarloaf, then made birdie on the par-5 sixth to get it to 1 under.

From there on, however, it was all downhill for Roger, who didn't make another birdie the rest of the way. He did make five bogeys and three doubles on the last 12 holes, and wound up with 39-43-82, 10 over par. Heading into round 2, he's in 77th place, with only Tommy Tolles behind him because Tolles withdrew after shooting 80.

Ken Duke and David Toms are the co-leaders with 7-under-par 65s, two strokes better than Steve Flesch and three ahead of Robert Karlsson, Paul Broadhurst, old reliable Steve Stricker and Mark Walker.

Scott Dunlap is best of the Gators with a 3-under-69, tied for 8th, followed by Chris DiMarco with 1-under 71 and Brian Gay with even-par 72. Marco Dawson, former touring pro at Ocala's Adena Springs course, was way off in the opener with a 6-over-78.
